Teachers use several methods to evaluate and measure their students’ learning, like assessment tests, oral presentations, and persuasive essays. But when you homeschool your child, you might ask this question, “How do I know about my child’s learning outcomes?” And surprisingly, nowadays, this is one of the most common questions parents ask due to the newly changed way of schooling.

Homeschooling does not mean that you can not measure your child’s learning. However, you have to find some other ways to measure your child’s progress in terms of knowledge.

Take a Different Approach

While discussing the theory, ask your child to explain what he has learned from the previous chapter. This way, you’re not only going to understand his knowledge about the chapter you taught, but also it will boost your child’s confidence. Alternatively, you may ask your child to enact a story of any chapter or recite a poem that he has read in literature.

When you teach your child, you also assess your child’s progress. You know your child better than the teacher as you deal with your child on a one-to-one basis. On the contrary, a teacher has to manage 25-30 children; it may not be possible for her to understand so profoundly about any child.

How Much vs. How Well

Many parents give more importance to the number of chapters their children are aware of. But do they know how well their children understand a branch of any particular subject? So this raises a question between quantity vs. quality. Therefore, instead of thinking your child learned less because he got distracted, consider the depth of his learning here—that’s a better way for measuring the progress than the quantity of what he accomplished in a specific period.

Think Digital

Increased screen time in children is something that every parent is juggling nowadays. But if taken wisely, the use of technology can be beneficial in assessing your child’s learning. There is the world outside your home which is growing day by day; take the benefits out of it in the best possible way. There are several online tests available for free that parents can use to see the child’s progress and knowledge regardless of any subject or language. Take the help of these online tests and evaluate your child based on the results. Additionally, several interactive videos and tutorials provide the best information and help increase the depth of your child’s knowledge.

Look For Progress, Not For Percentages

With a typical mindset of assessing quantity versus quality, most parents check the percentage of marks obtained by their children. However, they should see the progress of their children, too. For example, if the child has secured 67 percent of marks this time, compared to 50 percent last time, this is a good progress indicator. Whereas, if a child is consistently getting 60 percent of score every quarter, parents should check out the reasons behind it.
