Teen depression is a severe mental health problem that causes persistent sadness and loss of interest in activities. It affects a teenager’s thinking, feeling, and behaving, causing emotional, functional, and physical problems. Although depression can occur at any time in life, symptoms may vary between teens and adults.

Teenagers can feel lots of up and down due to their examination pressure, peer pressure, body changes, and about the future, too. However, for teens, feeling low can be something big as depression.

Depression in teens isn’t a sign of mental weakness that teens can overcome. Instead, it can have a severe impact on your teen’s overall wellbeing if not treated on time. For most cases, depression heals with physical counseling and proper medication; however, parental support and care are always required.

Signs and Symptoms of Depression in Kids

Depression in teens can vary in severity; however, in general, behavioral and emotional changes get prominently visible.

The feelings of sadness, frustration, anger, hopelessness, low self-esteem, tiredness, insomnia, change in appetite, and social isolation are common symptoms of depression in teens.

When to See a Doctor

Depression symptoms do not go on their own; instead, they can get even worse if not treated. Thus, talk to your child about his feelings and thoughts. At the same time, consult with your doctor to get the best therapy and medicines to help your child.
Depressed teens often feel suicidal; keep a proper check on your child’s conversation and thoughts. Share your concerns with your doctor as a parent and let your child speak freely to you and the doctor.

Prevention of depression is essential to keep the mental health status happy and sound. Encourage your teenagers to talk to you openly as and when it is required. Act like a friend instead of a parent. At this stage of life, your teenage child needs someone trustworthy to him rather than being judgemental to him.
