  1. Diwali is an important religious festival in India. It is called a Festival of Lights and usually lasts for five days.
  2. Diwali is celebrated during the Hindu month – Kartik (between mid-October and mid-November). It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.
  3. This festival is associated with Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of prosperity and wealth. However, there are many traditional legends about the Diwali festivals. They include the story of Lord Rama coming back to Ayodhya with Sita after 14 years of exile period, the defeat of Narakasura by Lord Krishna, and many others.
  4. Diwali is celebrated twenty days after Vijadashami (or Dusshera) festival, with Dhanteras marking the first day of the festival. On the other hand, Bhai Dooj marks the last day of this festival.
  5. The Jains observe Diwali, which marks the final liberation of Mahavira. The Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Diwas to mark the release of Guru Hargobind from Mughal Empire prison. And people from West bengal and Bangladesh celebrates Diwali by worshipping goddess Kali.
  6. The term ‘Diwali’ is derived from the Sanskrit language meaning ‘a row of lights’. Many Hindus associate the festival with the birth of Goddess Lakshmi after the churning of the cosmic ocean of milk, Samudra Manthan.
  7. Rituals and preparations for Diwali begins days or weeks in advance, typically after the Festival of Dusshera.
  8. On the second day of Diwali, Hanuman Puja is performed in Gujarat. It coincides with the day of Kali Chaudas.
  9. The day after Diwali is called Bali Pratipada, associated with the story of Bali’s defeat by the hands of Lord Vishnu.
  10. The last day of the festival is called Bhai Dooj, that celebrates the sibling bond between brother and sister.
