Bathing your baby is a great way to spend time together and bond with your baby. However, as a new parent, it is natural to feel a little worried and confused. You may have questions about bathing a newborn and using the right products for your baby.
One such question is whether you can use a body wash for newborns. Here’s your answer.
In the first few weeks, some people find that bathing the baby takes longer as they are extra careful. This is quite natural and parents get more confident as the weeks go by. If your baby doesn’t like having a bath the first few times, don’t worry much about it. Eventually, after a few weeks, they should get used to it and will start to enjoy it more.
Newborns should be given a warm and comfortable environment which can soothe them while they are being bathed. Usually, a bath two to three times per week is enough to keep your newborn baby’s skin clean.
However, if your baby likes to be bathed, you can bathe them more frequently. But limit it to one bath a day. However, at times frequent baths can dry your baby’s skin so be careful about using only a small amount of soap or baby wash.
Babies tend to commonly develop eczema as their skin barrier is delicate. Hence, Community Expert Dr Pooja Marathe recommends that we should avoid the usage of chemical-based body wash till eczema goes away. Choose a baby-safe, natural and organic baby moisturising wash to bathe your baby. If you do not prefer to bathe your baby every day, don’t forget to clean their genitals, nappy area, hands and face regularly. Use soft cotton wool and warm water to clean your baby’s face and eyes.
As for your baby’s nappy area, use a mild baby wash. For your baby’s hands, you can use a natural and safe handwash to clean them every day. If your baby’s skin is dry, you may use natural bamboo baby wet wipes in case the hands need just a quick wipe.
Dr Pooja Marathe says “Parents can use body wash for newborns. However, always choose the mild and gentle ones that are specially formulated for babies and their delicate skin.”
Consider using a fragrance-free baby body wash. If you are looking for the best baby body wash, pick a natural baby wash that has moisturising properties and natural ingredients like organic coconut oil, cocoa oil, vanilla oil and calendula extract.
As newborns are still adjusting to the environment around them, they tend to be very delicate and easily develop skin allergies, cough and cold and even catch a fever. Hence, picking the right products along with the right care is important for their well-being.
