Pregnancy can bring many physical changes, one of which is increased sweating, darkening and odour in the underarms. This can be uncomfortable and embarrassing for some women, but it is a common issue during pregnancy due to hormonal changes that affect sweat gland activity.

Some pregnant women even experience underarm darkening during pregnancy, where the armpit area becomes darker than it was before pregnancy. Even though it does not pose any danger to the health of the expectant mother and baby, it can cause embarrassment and discomfort. However, it often improves post-birth.

This is caused by the increase in hormones such as estrogen and progesterone during pregnancy. The increase in hormones stimulates the formation of melanin pigments, that cause the skin surface to change colour, leading to dark underarms. Some may even notice skin darkening in the folds of their body such as the groin and neck, besides the armpit.

Listed below are five tips for taking care of underarms during pregnancy and keeping them feeling fresh and odour-free.

Tips For Caring For Underarms During Pregnancy

1. Keep the area clean and dry

The first step in taking care of the underarms during pregnancy is to ensure good hygiene. Regular washing with a natural body wash and water can help reduce the odour and sweating that occur due to hormonal changes. In case you are travelling and you don’t have access to water, you can also clean the underarm area with natural water wipes.

This is especially important after any physical activity, such as exercise or household chores. Additionally, using a towel to dry the underarms thoroughly after washing can help keep the area dry and reduce the risk of skin irritation.

2. Avoid using harsh deodorants

Many deodorants contain harsh chemicals that can be harmful to the developing baby. Pregnant women should avoid using these deodorants and opt for more natural alternatives instead. Using a natural aloe vera gel not only keeps the area feeling fresh but also keeps it clean and odour free. It helps reduce sweat and odour without exposing the baby to potentially harmful chemicals.

3. Use natural remedies

Essential oils like tea tree and lavender have antiseptic properties that can help reduce sweat and odour. They can be applied directly to the underarms, or added to a natural deodorant for added protection. Baking soda can also be used as a natural deodorant – simply mix a small amount with water to create a paste, and apply it to the underarms as needed. This will help absorb moisture and reduce the risk of skin irritation.

4. Wear breathable clothing

Wearing loose-fitting clothes made from natural fabrics like cotton can help keep the underarms dry and reduce the chance of skin irritation. Synthetic fabrics like polyester can trap sweat against the skin, increasing the risk of skin irritation and odour. It’s best to opt for lightweight, breathable clothing that allows the skin to stay cool and dry.

5. Consult a doctor

If the underarm odour and sweating persist despite using these tips, it is recommended to consult a doctor. They may prescribe a safe antiperspirant or provide other advice to help manage excessive sweating during pregnancy. They may also be able to recommend other lifestyle changes, such as avoiding spicy foods or caffeine, that can help reduce sweat and odour.

Taking care of the underarms during pregnancy can be a challenge, but it’s not difficult if you keep these tips in mind and make some lifestyle changes that can help reduce sweat and odour.
