This hormone is the cause of your sudden hatred of your favourite foods because you can’t stand their smell. hCG is produced by the placenta after your eggs have fertilised into an embryo. The presence of this hormone is what detects and confirms your pregnancy when you pee on a stick or use a pregnancy test strip. Hence, it is very important to know the effects this hormone has on your body during pregnancy.

Now, until 11 weeks of your pregnancy, the hCG level in your body is a on constant fluctuation, where it rises till it reaches its peak around the end of your first trimester. This fluctuation causes your aversion to certain foods and their smells.

You may feel nauseous or pukish or even have morning sickness. Foods that are frequently avoided by women are meat, eggs, and spicy foods.

On the other hand, some women tend to have cravings for non-edible things such as ice, hair or chalk. This condition is called pica and you must consult your gynaecologist in case you experience these cravings at any point during your pregnancy.
