The cold winter can be difficult for babies as well as parents since they are constantly worried about keeping their babies warm and safe from the cold. Since infants cannot regulate their body temperature, most parents use heaters to keep them warm. But is it safe to use heaters in a baby’s room?

Babies cannot regulate their body temperature so using a heater in their room to keep them warm can be dangerous as it can cause serious health issues.

What Are The Risks Of Using A Heater In A Baby’s Room?

The ideal temperature of an infant’s room should be between 16 °C to 20 °C.  Using a heater in a baby’s room can be risky if not monitored. Some of the risks involved are:

  • Sudden Death Syndrome or SIDS caused by overheating.
  • Fire hazards if it comes in contact with synthetic and flammable materials like rayon, fibre, nylon, polyester, and even materials that are not synthetic like linen and cotton. A baby who has started crawling may even knock down the heater.
  • Burns. The outer surfaces of the heater like the grills and grates heat up quickly and can cause burns as babies are curious and may want to touch it.

Besides the risks, there are many health issues related to using a heater in a baby’s room.

A heater heats the air in a room causing the moisture in the room to evaporate. This leaves the air in the baby’s room dry causing serious health issues such as:

  • Dehydration: Overheating the room can cause your baby to sweat which can be dangerous as it can cause the baby to lose fluids causing dehydration. This can cause severe health issues.
  • Dry Nasal Passages: Similarly dry air can dry up the moisture in the  Dry air can dry up baby’s nasal passage which can cause irritation and nosebleeds.
  • Dry Skin: A baby’s skin can also become dry because of the dry air making it itchy and flaky. Baby’s delicate skin and lips tend to become dry during winter and a heater can only make it worse.

How Can I Keep My Baby Warm Without A Heater During Winter?

  • Keep the heater on at a low temperature (approximately around 20 degrees) for a short while and make sure you check your baby to see if he/she is sweating.
  • Add another layer of clothing.

Since parents want to keep their babies warm during the cold winter months, it is advisable to keep a check on their intimate areas to avoid rashes caused by sweating. Wipe the area clean with natural baby wipes and apply diaper rash cream in the diaper area after every diaper change.
