You have fed your baby with breast milk or formula milk for half the year. It is probably time to introduce them to more solid foods now. You, as a mother, are utterly confused on how you should switch from breast milk to smashed fruits. It is advisable you do not make the switch instantly. Start with a ratio of 1:4 of other recipes: breastmilk throughout the day with one helping of a solid food. As your baby get accustomed to the new taste, make the ratio 2:3, 3:2 and so on. Your baby might initially react and puke the whole food out, but do not worry. It is natural and due to a change in flavor.

Dos and don’ts of bringing about the switch

DO

1. Keep a three day gap between introducing any new recipe to your baby.

2. Start with only a tablespoon of mashed food daily. Once your baby adjusts to the food, increase the quantity gradually.

3. Use stainless steel or glass bowls to prepare the food.

4. Check with your doctor on the introduction of new food for your baby.

DON’T

1. Make the switch all of a sudden.

1. Banana mash

Mash the banana into a thin paste. Add a little water if necessary. You can run the banana in a blender or mash using your hands. It will add potassium and fibre to your baby’s diet.

2. Apple puree

Peel the apple thoroughly. Remove the core and seeds. Then, steam it for about 6-7 minutes and blend it to obtain a fine apple puree.

3. Rice cereal

Measure 1/4th cup of rice powder and one cup water. Start boiling the water in a saucepan. Add the rice powder while stirring continuously. Simmer for 10 minutes whisking continuously. Serve to your baby when it is warm.

4. Pea puree

Peas are a rich source of iron, vitamin A and C, protein and calcium. Make a paste of the peas and strain as much as possible.

5. Sweet potato puree

Cook the potato in a microwave for 8-10 minutes until soft. Cut it in half and scoop out the flesh. Make a puree using a blender or food processor. Make sure a smooth and even puree is made.

6. Carrot puree

Cut the carrot into small pieces. Boil in water for 6-7 minutes until soft. Blend in a blender and make a fine strained puree fit for your baby.

7. Baby khichdi

Once your baby has accepted food other than milk. You can introduce porridge. The only ingredients you will need are rice, moong dal, half a carrot and water. Firstly you need to wash the dal and rice thoroughly. Allow it to soak for 15-20 minutes. Cut the peeled carrot into small cubes. Boil them separately so they become soft. Then, put the carrot, dal and rice in a pressure cooker along with water. Allow it to cook for 3-4 whistles. Mash the mixture.

8. Avocado puree

Avocado is rich in fat content, which is essential for your growing baby. Babies need not be on a low-fat diet. Therefore, avocados are among the best products for your 6-month-old. Peel a ripe avocado and scoop out the flesh. Mash it using a fork or blender. Add a little water to make a thin and finely strained baby favourite. With these recipes, you will find yourself worrying less about feeding your baby.
