It is happening, an exciting journey full of new feelings and experiences. Your baby’s development is in the early stage and the facial features along with other internal organs are beginning to form. That’s why as your pregnancy progresses to six weeks, your diet needs more special attention and prenatal checkups.

Speaking to Baby Chakra, Paediatric Nutritionist Dr Pooja Marathe says, “You need to take care of your diet from the very beginning. You might be taking your daily folic acid supplement and eating foods rich in folate and iron.

Since your baby is developing and you tend to feel weak around 6 weeks of your pregnancy, you need to make sure your diet includes: 

  • Vegetables and fruits. Be sure to include a variety of colours.
  • Whole-grain foods. Enjoy a variety of whole grains including quinoa, whole grain pasta, whole grain bread, oatmeal, or brown rice.
  • Protein foods. It could be a personal choice of vegetarian or non-vegetarian food.
  • Healthy fats.

Best Foods to Eat During The 6th Weeks of Pregnancy 

  • Ginger Tea
    Ginger products like ginger tea or chews help ease nausea.
  • Lentils and Beans
    They are rich in folate, protein, iron and fibre.
  • Bananas
    Bananas are best for curing nausea and are rich in potassium.
  • Yoghurt
    They are rich in calcium and help support bone structure.
  • Greens
    Include spinach, kale, asparagus and avocados in your diet as they are rich in folate, iron, calcium, fibre and vitamins.
  • Lean Meat
    Chicken and pork tenderloin are rich sources of protein and fibre that act as building blocks for the body’s cells.

Diet Tips to Take Care of Morning Sickness and Nausea

  • Eat small portions of meals multiple times in a day rather than having three heavy meals.
  • Stick to a bland diet instead of greasy and spicy foods as they are easier to digest. 
  • Avoid lying down right away after eating.
  • Sour food and beverages might alleviate nausea temporarily.
  • Avoid any odours that can trigger nausea.
  • Drink lots of water and fluids. Take them more if you’ve been vomiting.
  • Ask your doctor if you can take ginger capsules or ginger tea, which may bring relief.
  • Take vitamin B6 supplements if your doctor approves. 
  • In some cases, women find relief in their motion sickness by wearing acupressure bands.

Most of the symptoms that you may experience during the 6th week of pregnancy are common and there is no need to worry.

However, in case you experience any persistent uneasiness including severe headache, vaginal bleeding, fever above 38 degree celsius and severe swelling of the face, fingers or hands then seek medical help immediately.
