Miscarriages can be very difficult and confusing to deal with. The excitement that comes with pregnancy and now the sudden lack of a baby.

If you have had a miscarriage, you may feel like you are alone even though 15% of all known pregnancies result in a miscarriage. You may even feel guilty for not doing enough. You should know most miscarriages are caused by factors that are way beyond your control like genetic abnormalities.

We have listed some of the most common causes of miscarriages and a couple of tips on how you can prevent them.

Chromosome abnormalities

This is one of the most common causes of a miscarriage. As you may already know, every human has 23 pairs of chromosomes – one set from the mother and the other set from the father. When the two sets don’t match up correctly, it can lead to a miscarriage. There is nothing that can be done to prevent this but you can always try again.

What you should do

If your miscarriage was caused due to chromosomal abnormalities, don’t lose hope. Your chances of having a second miscarriage due to this are low. However, if you do have a miscarriage again, it could have happened due to something that is treatable.

Shape of Uterus

Due to an abnormally shaped uterus, the embryo can’t implant itself and even if it does implant, it won’t be able to survive due to lack of nourishment.

What you should do

This can be corrected through surgery so do consult your physician to check if you have any abnormalities in the uterus shape.

Weakened Cervix

A weakened cervix can also lead to a miscarriage near the end of the first trimester. This occurs because the fetus is now big enough to cause the cervix to bulge. So, if the cervix is weak, the fetus can’t be held in.

What you should do

If you had a miscarriage due to weakened cervix, your physician will put stitches in the cervix to close it up.

PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome)

Women who have PCOS have high levels of the male hormone testosterone which cause abnormalities in ovulation and irregularities with menstruation.

What you should do

Your physician will prescribe medication to treat this so that you can have a healthy and normal pregnancy.

Another health condition directly linked with miscarriage is thyroid and diabetes. Both of these create unfavourable conditions for the fetus to survive.

What you should do

Follow all the necessary medications and treatment procedures to keep your diabetes in control. Thyroid conditions usually are corrected using the right medications. Lifestyle changes may also be required.

It is quite saddening that smoking, drugs and alcohol are the main reasons for a miscarriage. Another lifestyle factor is being exposed to harsh environments.

What you should do

For the sake of your baby, give up the habit of smoking. This goes for both the mother and father. Alcohol should be restricted to two glasses a day although it is always better to avoid it completely when trying to conceive. After conception, however, you must not consume any alcohol. Also, for obvious reasons, don’t make the foolish mistake of doing recreational drugs when pregnant or trying to conceive.

These are all the most common causes of a miscarriage. Please don’t lose faith if you had one. You can always keep trying – all it takes is a little patience.
