Winter brings with it new skin concerns for a baby and your baby’s facial skin needs special TLC during winter. Babies are prone to dry skin and skin issues and the harsh winter weather and the cold, dry air can make it worse and dry out a baby’s tender, soft, delicate skin.
That’s because during winter the air is cold and therefore holds less moisture causing dry skin. Here’s your guide to taking care of your baby’s facial skin during winter.
Some of the most common issues that a baby’s skin faces during winter are:
You can keep your baby safe from skin issues during winter by following some simple tips:
It’s best to use a baby-safe wash to gently wash your baby’s face. Apply a small amount of baby wash and massage your baby’s face gently with it. Wipe it off thoroughly with moist cotton or a soft moist washcloth. Choose a baby wash that has coconut-based mild cleansers that are very gentle on a baby’s skin, and oils like avocado, organic chamomile, and aloe vera gel which help soothe your baby’s delicate skin.
Exposure to hot water can cause a baby’s skin to lose moisture. During winter use lukewarm water to wash or wipe your baby’s facial skin.
Once your baby’s face is clean, take a small amount of baby cream or lotion and gently massage your baby’s facial skin with it in a circular motion. Using baby creams and lotions that contain ingredients such as nourishing butter like shea and cocoa, and oils like jojoba and avocado can do wonders for your baby’s delicate and sensitive skin as they provide deep nourishment and moisturisation to the baby’s skin, and balances skin pH.
You may think that using sunscreen on a baby’s skin is limited to summer but the winter sun can also cause harm to the baby’s skin. If your baby is over six months old, make sure you layer your baby’s facial skin with a generous amount of sunscreen after applying the baby cream or lotion.
Babies are prone to dry lips and it can get even worse during the winter months. Using a natural baby-safe lip balm on your baby’s lips will keep the lips well hydrated.
