Making of a happy pregnancy
Pregnancy is a time of much anticipation, discomfort and stress. There are so many questions on your mind - whether you are doing the right things and would you make a good mother. In the midst of all these, we must not forget to savour this beautiful period of our life. I would like to share some thoughts which I learnt from my mistakes(and things that I did right), and others too, so that at least someone else might benefit.
1. Diet:- Watch what you eat. You need to eat smartly. Do not eat for two, you will gain weight unnecessarily and after delivery would have to struggle to lose that flab. Proteins are your best friend. Think sprouts, dals and egg whites. But do not forget others like fibres, fats, carbs etc. too. Drink 3ltrs. water daily. Keep some healthy snack options handy like a pack of nuts, a supply of fruits or a bowl of salad.
2. Exercise:- Only after permission from your doctor, keep active according to your fitness levels. 30 minutes of walking or prenatal yoga are good options. Exercising will make you feel really energetic, fresh and happy.
3. Educating yourself:- Although almost everyone wants a vaginal delivery, sometimes things may not go according to your plans. It is good to be educated about both types of deliveries, postpartum care and also about caring for baby(especially breastfeeding). It would become overwhelming at the last moment. A word of caution here, please steer clear off of surgical details.
Enlisting help:- Decide early on whether you will be caring for the baby alone or taking help. If you are going to need a maalishwali or maid, book them beforehand to avoid last minute hassles. The seventh month would be a good time for this.
Preparations:- Get your hospital bag ready at around 34 weeks. Wash and disinfect and keep the clothes ready. Think about each and everything you may need for a 4 day hospital stay, and pack accordingly. Prepare for the baby as well.
Indulge yourself:- Last, but not the least, do not forget to pamper yourself. Treat yourself to a beauty treatment(sans chemicals), new dresses, an ice cream, good books and music or a fun movie, whatever you enjoy. Also capture memories of this wonderful phase of your life with a photoshoot and/or diary.
