From personal experience I would say, as imp it is to talk about the benefits, it is equally relevant to address the challenges that most women face during their breastfeeding journey. There are so many mums out there, especially moms of twins, who couldn't start off breastfeeding at all simply coz of lack of knowledge or support at the initial stage & there are so many others who started off happily but couldn't continue for more than 5 or 6 months.
Talking about me, I had read a lot about breastfeeding twins during my pregnancy yet I came across some very common issues when I started off. It took me a lot of time, patience & dedication to find solutions for these and go on breastfeeding my twins. Sharing some of them here with the hope that any new mom of twins reading this post would find it helpful.;
🔹Prematurity & low birth-weight - A&A were tiny babies, like literally, & I would be so scared just to hold them, forget about making them latch. Meeting a lactation consultant, seeking guidance from hospital nurses and knowing about various feeding/tandem feeding positions helped a lot.;
🔹Low Supply - Another concern and a real one for a mom of twins. Personally I had to resort to many galactogogues, but the underlying rule that always worked is - the more you feed, the more you produce.;
🔹Back/Neck Ache -; Severe problem that didn't let me feed both the kids for more than 5 mins at a go. I would say invest in a feeding pillow, preferably a twin feeding pillow, that would ensure the right back & neck posture!
🔹Engorgement - Occurs if the baby does not feed properly. In case of twins, each child may have different sucking & feeding behaviours which can cause it all the more. As a solution, use a breast pump & try expressing milk. Also, try alternate each twin with each breast. This helps to equalise the milk production.
