Sowmya, I think I missed out on answering your question.

So my suggestion is to not try to stop thoughts. The more we try to control our thoughts, the more they come. Instead the idea is to not get affected by the negative thoughts by not grieving them importance, but not believing. If we don’t believe a thought, it takes away the power from that thought. And soon, the frequency of these thoughts automatically reduce.
