Carbohydrates are the main macronutrient that our body needs for energy and fuel.

Carbohydrates can be found in variety of healthy and unhealthy foods. They can be found in the form of sugar, starches and fibers. Example of Carbohydrates foods are :- Potato, Sweet potato, Sugar, Wheat, Rice, Oats, Breads, popcorns, pasta, etc...

Foods that contains carbohydrates are very essential part of our diet because they give our body glucose and that glucose turns into energy.

1 gram of Carbs = 4 kcal.

But just because Carbohydrates are good source of energy that doesn't mean to overeat them. It is very important thing to consider that quality and quantity of Carbohydrates foods should be kept in mind while planning an individual diet.

Carbohydrates eaten in very large quantity can make us to gain weight and become the main root cause of many diseases.

It should be kept in mind that Protein and fats also gives us energy. Infact fats are the purest form of energy. Protein can also when needed can provide our body with energy.


There are 2 types of Carbohydrates-

1. Complex (good)

2. Simple (bad)

Both forms can turn to glucose.

But as you can read above simple carbohydrates can be referred as bad because they comes in the form of sugar or anything that contains sugar. So, it turns to glucose more faster than complex carbohydrates.


Bread, cake, sugar, sugar syrup, chips, processed foods etc.

Complex Carbohydrates should definitely be included in your diet because they don't turn to glucose that fast and they have more fibres in them to help reduce the problem of constipation.


peas, beans, whole grains, vegetables like potato, sweet potato, colocassia ( arbi) etc.

It is very important that 40% of our calories should come from COMPLEX CARBOHYDRATES.

NO amount or very little amount SIMPLE CARBS can be involved in our diet occasionally.

Every time you eat unhealthy carbs you are actually taking several steps towards unhealthy life. So, you don't have to be afraid that you will get sugar or anything by eating carbs because right amount of any nutrient is never harms anyone.
