Sandwiched
“Hey, sweety . Is it morning already?” I rubbed my eyes and gave my three year old a gentle hug.
“Peppa, mumma.” She said as she shoved the remote in my face.
“Peppa time is only in the …..oh no...” I jumped out of the sofa. With a loud thud, the plate that was resting on my stomach fell to the floor. Along with it was my handcrafted sandwich I prepared for lunch. After, Ruhi comes back from school I usually have a nice meal prepared for lunch and relish it while she sleeps. This time I was the one that had the nap time.
“Ruhi, why didn’t you wake up mommy?” I looked at the clock. I had only seven minutes to pick up my elder one from school. ;
I ran to the bedroom and changed my clothes. It was Tuesday, which also meant after school football coaching. With disheveled hair, my son’s sports bag and Ruhi in my arms I ran out, leaving my smashed sandwich behind.
On the drive to his school I desperately looked everywhere in the car and my purse for the tiniest of crumbs. I usually pack jim jams or oreos but today, I had nothing. In a while I couldn’t tell which was getting louder - my tummy growling or my incessant honking. The cars in front of me were just so slow for the right lane. “Afternoon traffic? ...Move it already!!!...Shit!”
“Shit.” Ruhi repeated.
“No...no sweety don’t say that. Mommy said…...shit..shitake mushrooms. I have to order for dinner.”
We reached the school ten minutes late. Which also meant a grumpy hormonal eight year old being late for his practice.
“You are late. You are supposed to me here at three, mom.”
“Really?...I had no idea!” My head was now pounding. It’s all connected. First, my hungry tummy rumbles then my hunger goes straight to my head. ;
I sped as fast as I could and threw his school bag out.
“Don’t forget to pick me up after Ruhi’s school meeting, mom.” He said as he ran off.
I looked back at Ruhi. A girl who just started school seven months ago had more school meetings then I ever had my entire high school year. I was so tempted to bunk the meeting and head for the nearest McDonalds.
“Damn it!” I yelled.
“Damn it!” She copied.
We reached her preschool and all the other mothers were seated. I quickly ran my fingers through my hair and glanced down at myself. I was still wearing my house chappals.
“Ah ..screw…….I looked at Ruhi’s curious eyes….”screwdriver.” I smiled at her.
As I sat down, I pulled out my phone and texted my busy husband. “I hate you!.....” I texted. He instantly replied with an ice cream icon.
Ruhi gently tugged my shirt. “Mama, khaana.” She said and gave me her sticky Dora lunch box. I opened it. To my pleasant surprise was a jam and green chutney sandwich.
