A menstrual cycle is a hormonal driven cycle. It is counted from the first day of the period when bleeding occurs. Approximately on the 14th day of the menstrual cycle, one of the ovaries releases an egg and ovulation takes place. If an egg is not fertilized, hormone levels eventually drop and the egg begins to dissolve at about day 25. The cycle begins again with the period at about day 30. The duration of days for each menstrual cycle differs between each individual women.
