Yday i had got a 3D growth scan with which the radiologist said she is able to detect cleft lip only symptom. It looks unilateral in the images. She said there is nothing to worry and that it can be corrected by a surgery. She said my gynec ll explain to me ib detail. I will meet my gynec one week later only.
The news is kind of devastating to both me and my husband. We are trying our best to stay positive.but m not able to keep away from thinking about this.it is not the beauty that concerns me.i am worried about breastfeeding, speech issues if anything might arise, any other side effects that could arise. The ide of putting myjust borb under knives is crushing me.
Please let me know if this is common and what all i should be prepared for.
Already the blame game of people asking me did u have follic acid regularly or did u miss some has started.as if this pain is not enough, some in close circles add the guilt factor also and make me feel very bad.
Please suggest... TIA

Hello , cleft lip with or without cleft palate is 4 th commonest birth defect in US just to tell you that it’s quite common and is correctable . There are multiple factors that can lead to its occurrence genetic and environmental like certain medications taken during pregnancy , smoking , alcohol or even some viruses, etc so to pinpoint Only at folic acid intake would not be correct . Do not feel guilty about it as it’snot your fault . And most kids born with this defect lead an absolutely normal life cosmetically and functionally without any speech defects or feeding difficulties. most children affected by this condition can achieve normal appearance, speech, and eating.usually the surgery for cleft lip is done around 3-6 months and best to guide you in this would be a plastic surgeon . Usually feeding issues occur mainly with cleft palate and palate requires correction with multiple surgeries . Cleft lip usually gets corrected in one sitting , depending on the extent though. So do not worry , eat well and stay positive .
