With consistent trial and error approach I managed to device a meltdown-proof "HOW TO SHOP WITH CHILD" strategy.
.
1) Timing- Might seem insignificant but going out at right time might avert huge meltdowns.
Always select a time when, the place is less crowded and your child is well rested.😇😇
.
2)Hungry child is an angry child- Nobody makes good decisions with hungry stomach, your child is no exception. Before heading out make sure child is full. Always carry snacks for those untimely hunger pang.🥗🥗
.
3) Place your child in charge - A child behaves wonderfully if he has something to do, he will obviously be annoyed if he is tagged along with no real role to play. Hand your child list of things to be bought, ask for his opinion every single time before making a purchase. (Grocery, clothes, household items everything) . You ll get most extraordinary unbiased compliments like boo showers me with.📒📒
.
4) Give power with responsibility - This one was total game changer for us. Before stepping into mall/store, we remind boo what is expected from him-
a) Outside the store- Promise you ll help mumma papa, promise you ll use your words when you need something not tears, promise no tantrums/fighting.
b) Inside the store -You can buy one thing for yourself, but you have to come up with 2 reasons, why you want it.
Might seem too complex, but trust me once you start practicing it becomes easier for child to comprehend.
Earlier boo would come up with just one reason- "I really want it". But with time, he has begun to give more reasons, if he really wants something otherwise he ll put it down and move on to next item. 💰💰
.
This actually helps in cutting down the unnecessary purchase we make out of guilt, just to keep your child quiet, back home that item.is never touched!.
.
5) When everything else fails, leave everything and step outside to calm your child and yourself. Start fresh.👪
