Baby grooming- All about nail care

Ahh babies!!!

Such cute, little, warm pink bundles of joy!! The pink face reminds me of a freshly bloomed rose bud, ready to blossom into a beautiful rose. But, what's a rose without thorns? Well, Babies have thorns too!! Don't believe me? Just have a look at the nails of your lil pink bundle of joy and you will understand what I mean!!

When my daughter was born, there were 2 things I was most worried about. First, she bring able to latch properly, and second, how do I trim her nails. Howsoever soft and harmless they looked, I soon discovered that apparently, they had the potential to give me and herself red scratches all over our faces...

Being the clueless mom I was, I asked my mom how to cut her nails. She said, cut while she is asleep after her bath. My mother in law also said the same thing, adding that they become soft and easy to cut after a bath.

I ordered a baby nail clipper with a magnifying glass too, to cut her tiny weapon. All armed with the theory knowledge, I was all set for the mission.

Next day, she slept after her bath. And my hands started shaking in fear.... What if I cut her skin along too? What if she moves? What if she cries?

I couldn't do it and handed the nail clipper to my mom. For initial few days, she used to cut her nails. My job was to keep her nails clean so that she doesn't catch infection.

But, for how long? Ultimately I had to do something. One day, I gathered all courage that I had. Held her small hand softly, and ever so gently started trimming off her nails.

I must admit, the nail clippers made the work too easy, it was shaped like a scissor so it was convenient to hold n cut her tiny nails.

I'm attaching the nail clippers I have for reference, so that it becomes easier for you to understand what I'm talking about.

The regular nail clipper with magnifying glass did not work for us, I just couldn't use it to trim her nails. It might be helpful, but the scissors shaped one worked for us and made things easy.

It is important to trim off your precious one's nails every 3 days, because believe it or not, baby nails grow really really fast, more than we can imagine, so every 3 days, we are back to square one.

There is no escape, because you might think that I'm unable to cut the nails, I'll make the baby wear mittens and it will be fine.

Just that, IT WON'T.

I haven't come across a single baby who is fond of wearing mittens. You make them wear it, and in minutes, you find the mittens on floor. How they manage to do it, being born just few hours back, remains a mystery to me!!!

Moms, here are my 2 cents on how you can cut baby nails. As I said, they are the softest after the bath. Try to trim them at that time, during post bath feed, or while the baby is feeding post bath, or during post bath nap. Use scissor shaped baby nail clippers instead of regular nail cutters. It will help.
Keep your bundle of joy, happy, cheerful and free from infections by not letting any germs to breed in those tiny nails.

Happy grooming 😊

Till we meet again 😊
