Yes you heard that right, I am talking about bed toys.
Isn't bedtime meant for bedtime stories, lullabies and falling asleep?
Yes, of course it is so. And most moms sing and read to their babies and toddlers at the bedtime. And that is a very healthy and meaningful way to fall asleep.
But I failed to do so.
After 8 hours of duty and meeting around 200 patients each day, I fail to read and sing to my baby.
And mom guilt sets in within me in just a blink of the eye. I am actually the paranoid mom. His nanny or daddy or granny usually offer to help. But nanny would sit him in front of the tv while daddy and granny have YouTube. So much screen time was not tolerable at all. So I decided to make more efforts. Since talking was too tiring, I give him a few toys on the bed. We start out in full light and then 20 to 30 minutes later I switch over to dim lights. He plays with his toys silently , only if he is already tired of shouting and jumping around all day. Otherwise he will again and again try to get off the bed. At that time I have to get involved in his play and keep him interested in play. Gradually he falls asleep with a toy in his hands. Some days he tosses a lot before falling asleep. Those days I just do light massage of his feet and calf muscles.
So here is a list of Govind’s bedtime toys for silent play.
1) Shape sorter
2) Ring stacker
3) Pop – in pals
4) Beads maze
5) Building blocks
I found him to be mentally very active at this time. I was amazed at his way of exploring things and speed of learning.
This way he was away from screen and I was glad at the productivity. Now this is the time I look forward to in a day and enjoy watching him on his exploration journey.
Some days it is difficult to put him to sleep. On those nights, I have to sing to him while rocking him in my arms and walking as well; despite a tough day. On extremely difficult days or when I am ill, I just fight my mom guilt and switch off my mommy senses.
