Celebrating Halloween🎃..how as a muslim parent are you going to explain it to your kids?
.
The first and foremost point to be noted in any scenario is to establish a better communication with our little ones. As the world out there is cruel, we have to encourage our kids to be more open to us. To do this we must create an environment where our children will trust us with their mistakes, their curiosity and their problems. They will do this more and more when they are reminded of how much we love them. Isn’t it?
.
.
We should remind our children that the things which are forbidden in Islam are for the good to humanity. And it really does not mean that they cannot have non-Muslim friends or that they will have to be excluded from all of their school activities or things that they love doing. Talking about halloween, this is tricky when kids find their friends and families celebrating it, it’s natural they’d also want to. So we just cannot get over by saying, ‘we don’t celebrate this, or its ‘Haraam!’. We very well know those little curious minds, they need explanations, they need reasons why? why not? etc etc.
.
.
What as parents can we do?
🌿 You and your spouse should have a word and be on the same page while explaining them.
🌿 A straight or a strict NO.. won’t help, show more compassion — allow them to have doubts, concerns and questions popping!
🌿 Throw a little light over Islam and tell how it is not allowed because it is considered a festival of celebrating evil, black magic, wearing scary outfits etc.
🌿 Plan a family gathering or a short trip on that particular day, to divert them from even thinking of attending one.
🌿 Last but not the least, communicate, communicate and communicate — that’s the only key!
.
Lastly,I really don’t want our children to feel as though Islam doesn’t let them have fun, but we teach them the principles that will help them navigate through life so that they can have fun in a manner that is permissible, harmless and encouraged.
.
I pray that Allah سبحانه و تعالى grants us the wisdom and knowledge to live among our peers with mutual respect, understanding and raise our children with good values. Ameen!
