Children are curious creatures. They start from fragile little babies and then learn almost impossible things like walking, talking, jumping what not. What is miraculous here is there self belief that they can do anything and everything. That’s what’s makes them such amazing learners.

But as they grow, the negativity and constant ‘No’ they hear from people, including parents and caretakers, around them starts to eat away this innate confidence or may I call ‘The Superpower’.

Off late, I have been observing this with my almost 6year old. He is getting frustrated too easily and indulging in ‘self-negative’ talk. This really broke my heart as this is one ‘superpower’ I don’t want to loose. So, to remind him of his superpower we did this little activity.

I made some positive affirmations sheets for him and coloring posters for him to help the message sink in. He choose the affirmations which he resonated with. It is important to act as a guide in this process and let your child engage in self-actualization.

Since the posters required cutting, soon my son was frustrated yet again with his developing scissor skills. But this time a magical moment happened which assured me that I am on the right track. He got up from his chair angry and went to the other side and sat on the bed. When I plodded what’s wrong he said ‘I am calming myslef’. And within 4-5mins he was back on his table cutting the affirmation posters.

We also engaged in affirmation posters which he colored very keenly. He is not a coloring fan but I guess the positivity around the discussion really casted it’s spell on my little one. We concluded with setting up his chosen affirmations on the pin-board. We have made it a point we read them every morning.

Affirmations like any other thing, rely of repetition. We need to reaffirm ourselves over and over again.

It is essential that children are introduced to positive self-talk. Our world currently so full of negativity. Open the newspaper and you feel depressed for the day. But if we all make an endeavor to look for positive things happening around, we will be more than surprised. There is so much more good in the world…it is just what we choose to see.

I would strongly recommend you to do this exercise with your children at home. Positivity is the best gift you can give yourself.
