DELAYED CORD CLAMPING (DCC) FOR THE PREVENTION OF IRON DEFICIENCY AND ANAEMIA IN INFANTS. Delayed Cord Clamping (DCC) is recommended to improve maternal and Infant health and nutrition outcomes.
Delayed Cord Clamping means, the Newborn's umbilical chord isn't clamped soon after Childbirth, instead it is clamped and cut after 2-5 minutes, so as the blood flows back to the baby from the placenta.
The Umbilical cord should be clamped 2-3 minutes later than clamping it soon after birth.
As a Midwife, I strongly suggest you to wait until the cord stops pumping. BENEFITS :
1) This method allows more blood to transfer from the Placenta to the Infant.
2) It also increases Infant's blood volume by up to a third.
3) It increases the Iron storage.
Iron is one of the most essential factors for a baby's healthy brain development. Delayed Umbilical Cord clamping is often confused with Milking of the Cord. Miking refers to physically expressing blood from the Umbilical Cord.
Infant gets benifitted by DCC in increasing hemoglobin levels at birth and improves iron storages in the first several months of life which also reflects in their growth and development.
However, Delayed cord clamping does not increase the risk of Postpartum Hemorrhage. So mommies!!! Its our rights to request our Doctors to do DCC (Delayed Cord clamping) during childbirth.
