Did you read today's Google Doodle?
I had no idea who Anandi Gopal Joshi was. So I clicked her wiki page to find out more. I looked at her DOB and DOD a few times and made sure I calculated right. She lived for all of 22 years and in such a short time made such an impact....?! I read more and my heart broke when I read about her early life.
"As it was the practice at that time and due to pressure from her family, Anandi was married at the age of nine to Gopalrao Joshi, a widower almost twenty years her senior."
Gulp. She was all of 9 years old (younger than my childoo!) when she was married to a 29 year old man (widower!). We had read about child marriages in our history books in school. And how so many progressive thinking activists fought hard to change the laws. But I kept on visualising how this child's childhood must've changed forever.
"At the age of fourteen, Anandibai gave birth to a boy, but the child lived only for ten days because the medical care necessary for his survival was unavailable. This situation proved to be a turning point in Anandibai's life, and inspired her to become a physician."
She delivered at the age of 14. What were you doing at 14? I was in 9th std and the highlight of my life then was I was allowed to cycle to school (11kms to & fro everyday!).
Thank God things are so different now. History sometimes teaches you to be grateful...

When I was small I remember watching a serial made on her life on DD channel.. and that is when my mom said that look her husband struggled so much to make her a doctor... There was a scene in which he was fighting with her to study and she was cleaning rice so he took that plate and taught her alphabets.

Its really hear wrenching to read what life and status our women from yesteryears have experienced..; Sati, child marriage, widows living a poor life ,dowry killings...so much, still some had managed to break the shackles of regressive thinking and male dominance and hundreds of; restrictions..this is commendable.. They are the pioneers of feminism in our country and I salute them..;
