;#Disease alert Food protein induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a frustrating and scary condition that effects infants and young children. FPIES is a non-Ige mediated response that causes inflammation of the small and large intestines. FPIES is most commonly triggered by soy and dairy, but really can be caused by any food. Other common ones include oats, rice and corn. Typical symptoms include profuse vomiting & diarrhea and lethargy. The symptoms are delayed, starting several hours after consuming the trigger food. What’s the treatment? Well, like any food intolerance or allergy, the solution is to avoid all of the triggers. This can be fairly simple if there is just one food causing the symptoms, but in my experience working with these moms and kiddos, that’s not usually the case. Often there are multiple foods suspected, which makes introducing solids a challenging process. The good news is that most babies outgrow FPIES by the age of 3. I STRONGLY recommend working with an experienced dietitian.
