Pregnancy is bliss in every women's life & Doctors are no different. Being a pediatrician, I was mindful of the process of labor, delivery & newborn care in the most comprehensive way ever possible. Observing women going through labor made me quite indifferent to it. But things changed when I became pregnant this year, that too an unplanned pregnancy. The decision to have a child is a big one & we were unprepared.
Lethargy & vomiting that came at the start were difficult to handle. I was working in wards where there were strong smells of body fluids & unbathed homeless people which used to exaggerate my nausea making me run to the dirtiest toilets the hospital had. The pandemic had just started & I couldn't wear PPE kit & breathe in that almost impermeable mask. Working night shifts tampers with circadian rhythm, not to mention continuous standing & doing procedures for hours. Eating breaks were difficult, considering precautions keeping COVID-19 were also needed to be taken. The risk of getting infected with bloodborne infection & radiation risk was making me anxious all the time. With so many risks & no easy way out, I had to quit after a few days. After all, a baby is a topmost priority even before arrival in this world.
It’s easier to read about morning sickness & fatigue but you only get to know how it feels after you have faced it personally. Mine was among the worst cases of morning sickness. There were so many doubts regarding every edible thing, potentially harmful food, exercise, sleep & a million more that nobody understands. Connecting to like-minded people who are in the same boat or have experienced is very important. Medical books have immense knowledge but sadly, they don’t talk about unexpected cravings, mood swings, anxiety, and other similar feelings and emotions. Luckily, I landed at BabyChakra and found many people sharing things none of the books were telling. This pregnancy has also taught me more about empathy & compassion which we forget over time treating patients. Looking forward to learning a lot more during this incredible journey of pregnancy & motherhood.""
