Fasting during pregnancy is proven to be risky for you as well as your unborn. Ramadan which falls in the summers makes it even more difficult for pregnant women to be without water and food the entire day.
We all know that the pregnancy period demands an increased intake of nutrients, vitamins, minerals, fluids, and other important components that play a role in the growth and development of the fetus as well as support your health. Fasting during such times makes the body deficient in these important components in turn increases the risk of complications.
Excess dehydration during pregnancy can increase the risk of neural tube defects, preterm delivery, low amniotic fluid, etc. In addition to this, dehydration also affects breastmilk production in women.
On the other hand, nutrient deficiency may increase the risk of low birth weight, preterm delivery, high blood pressure in the newborn, issue with the growth and development of the fetus, etc.
When it comes to your own health, fasting during pregnancy may lead to excess fatigue, fluctuation in blood pressure, dizziness, a variation in blood sugar levels, etc. A sudden increase or decrease in blood sugar is extremely harmful to women with diabetes or gestational diabetes. An overall deficiency and weakness may increase the risk of a fall, and physical trauma during your pregnancy that might affect the growing fetus.
For all these important reasons fasting during pregnancy is a strict NO.
Advice: In case one decides to fast, do consult your doctor before doing so.
