Five Mistakes That Moms Usually Make While Dressing Their Newborns
Baby clothes are obviously adorable, so it is challenging for moms to avoid overflowing their little one’s wardrobe. We look forward to dress our new-borns when they arrive. From photoshoots, to family gatherings to family outings, we love dressing up our babies. But often we are so caught up to ensure our little babies are dressed to impress that we end up making mistakes.
Dressing babies is so much fun, but there are certain essential things we need to take care of to ensure that our babies are dressed as safely as possible. Here are a few mistakes new moms often end up making:
Putting Too Many Layers
It can be difficult to tell whether a child is warm enough. That’s why plenty of moms stack their new-borns in layers. By putting a bunch of clothes, moms feel they protect their kids from the cold. And, while it might seem like a good thing to cover a baby in a bunch of layers, it can actually be quite risky. This can increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), which leads to the accidental death of a child. All of these layers can contribute to suffocation because a layer can potentially move up the mouth and nose of a new-born. It can also lead to overheating, which is a risk factor associated with SIDs.
So, we should dress our babies in the same number of layers we’re wearing, plus one extra layer for warmth. Although it’s important to keep newborns warm, it’s just as important that the baby doesn’t overheat.
So, avoid wrapping your baby in bunny rugs and blankets. Lightweight muslin and cotton wraps work well because they’re less likely to overheat your baby.
Usage of Wrong Detergent
Kids have very delicate skin and washing their clothes with detergents that contain fragrances, dyes, or colors may make them suffer from allergic reactions and skin irritations. Cleaning baby clothes with baby laundry detergents is one way of ensuring that the baby remains safe at all times. Baby laundry detergents are chemical-free and thus protect your baby’s skin from irritants.
Not Cutting Tags
You can't stop scratching at tags until you finally grab a pair of scissors and cut them out. New-borns feel the same way about those big, itchy, irritating tags. However, unlike you, they can't reach to scratch them or use their words to tell you that they are annoying them. So, they sob unceasingly before mom gets rid of it. The last thing you want to do is to cause unnecessary pain and discomfort for your child, so make sure you first check the garments and get rid of any labels.
Buying Fancy Outfits for New-borns
While frills could also be beautiful, too many might be harmful for a new-born baby. Choose dresses that aren’t too large and have frills sewn down. It might sound too cautious, however with regards to new-borns, no one is just too cautious. Apart from frills and over-dimensional clothes which can enhance the danger of suffocation and result in SIDS, excessive collars may result in strangulation and SIDS. These necks can simply be wrapped round a new child’s neck, particularly when she sleeps, and her air passage might be reduced. As well as, if the collar is unfastened or the garments too large, the collar can slip over the mouth and nostril of the infant, which might trigger suffocation.
Bibs and child safety
Always remove bibs after feeding and before you place your baby or child down to sleep. This is because there is a strangulation risk to your child from bibs. This can happen both when your child is awake or being placed down to sleep.
