Fruit juice is an important contributor to Failure to Thrive and poor growth in young children by providing relatively empty carbohydrate calories and diminishing a child's appetite for nutritious meals and hence leading to decreased caloric intake. Avoid fruit juices as starter foods and as a substitute for meals and snacks. Sonalis Desk

For young children it is best to avoid fruit juice completely. As your child grows and participates in athletic events etc it can be given as a post event snack along with a protein snack.
