I just heard this on the radio
There was a boy was in a very traditional school many many years ago. Normally for punishment the principal would hit the children with a cane (horrible)

One boy got in trouble and was to be given 2 cane strikes in that week. He was horrified.

So he wore 3 underpants, shorts , tissue, swimming trunks under his pants.
When his turn came. No pain just a naughty smile.
