#Happy New Year #Breastfeeding Solutions Let's talk about breastfeeding solutions when baby comes out not wanting to latch right away. Some babies do, some babies don't. Mama, it's nothing you are doing wrong if this happens.
In the first 24 hours, our expectations on newborn latching are pretty low. We give them a bit of a grace period. Why? Well, because child birth is not only hard work for you, but for baby as well. They typically like to go through the sleepy stage of sometimes not wanting to do much but...sleep AND.. It's okay, mama!!
However, we do encourage mama's regardless to watch for baby feeding cues and to try not to go over the 4 hour mark. If baby dosen't want to latch by then, don't be too quick to pull out the bottle of formula, there are ways to work around it!
1. Use a plastic spoon. Yes, a regular plastic spoon. The maternity until will provide them. All you have to do is ask. We will show you how to hand express colostrum, your "first milk" into the spoon to feed baby to keep that blood sugar up! One plastic spoon is equivalent to 2.5 cc's.
Or
2. Hand express into a medicine up and feed baby the colostrum in the cup. We also provide them at your local hospital and can instruct you how to feed them properly!
Remember, baby's stomachs are the size of a cherry at birth so they will not need a lot of colostrum during one feeding, especially the first few days.
It's important to keep your breasts stimulated if baby isn't latching to remind your body to bring in the supply you need. Without demand, there is no supply!
