Hello everyone, this is an extended update to my yesterday's post. Nemit is doing fine and we are keeping a close watch on his behaviour.

Nemit had MMRV vaccination on 3rd July and next morning he had an unprovoked seizure. Now because it was the first time something like this happened, we were not prepared neither aware of what needs to be done in such a situation. At first we were thinking it to be the after effect of a bad dream and did everything to bring him out of his half sleep state.

This continued for a long time, for first 3 mins he was not responding and was jerking his head the way babies do after crying for a very long time. I also tried to make a video when he was coming back to normal. He was happily playing within next 2 mins.

We instantly googled for side effects of MMRV vaccine and it was mentioned that in rare cases it can lead to febrile seizures (fever caused seizures) but because Nemit had no fever we got panicked.

Yesterday when we met the Neurologist, we tried to explain every bit of detail we could remember and showed him the video. Doc gave us good 40 mins and kept observing Nemit for the whole time. On examination he found him to be normal without any neurologic deficit.

He explained a bit about what seizures are-

During a seizure or convulsion, a child becomes unconscious, the eyes roll backwards, the body stiffens, and the arms and legs jerk. Most seizures last less than 5 mins.

There are many kinds of seizures. Most common are Febrile (caused by fever) and Non Febrile (without a fever).

-Febrile Seizures -- some children have a seizure when their temperature rises quickly, usually to 102 degrees or higher. These are called febrile or fever-caused seizures. They affect children between the ages of 3 months and 6 years and are most common in toddlers.

-Non-febrile Seizures -- less then one-third children suffer from seizures which are caused by epilepsy, a disease in which repeated seizures are triggered from within the brain.

((Many children who have a seizure without fever or other known cause never experience another seizure))

He also explained that if it's the 1st seizure, they do not recommend any treatment at first. This is especially likely if there were no unusual features and if no specific medical problem is suspected.

He advised us for MRI and EEG because we were too panicked. But we are quite sceptical after he explained the procedure for these tests which requires administering anaesthesia and child should not be fed for at least 5 hrs before the test. Both the tests can't be performed on the same day that means repeating the same process one more time.

Doc gave us few instructions in case there is another seizure.

- Help the baby to turn sideways towards the left. (We were holding him upright)

- Don't put anything in baby's mouth. (I tried to breastfeed him, which he was not able to take)

- Most seizures subside within 3 mins, if not then take baby to the nearest hospital.

We have to keep a watch on Nemit, his development and behaviour for next few weeks. And we are praying & hoping that this was the first and the last occurrence, keeping our faith strong. 🙏
