Hello mommies.. I am posting this to bring awareness about a disease called biliary atresia which is a rare liver disease in infants. I and my husband was so happy when we got to know that I was pregnant. Each day we prayed god to give us a lovely daughter.
But God blessed us with an angel 🙏 My husband works at Ethiopia and I came to India for my delivery. I had a normal delivery and was very excited to see my daughter in my husband's arms. I thought I have succeeded in giving him a daughter as he always wanted one. Later he left to Ethiopia and I was taking care of my girl along with my family. My girl was very active, took regular feeds and poops were also regular. She had her regular checkups and vaccines. Suddenly I started noticing her poop colour changing to white. I also noticed her skin and white eyes changing yellow. However I brought it to the notice of our pediatrician.
He said she doesn't have jaundice and she's completely fine. Later on, when I started seeing her skin changing more yellow and poops to white, we went for a bilirubin test and also had abdominal ultrasound. Bilirubin values were high and liver was enlarged and gall bladder was not visible in ultrasound. I had faith in God.. may be my daughter has to go through photo therapy and we Consultant another pediatrician in one of the best hospitals in Hyderabad. We were advised to have biliary scintigraphy and there we recognized she had biliary atresia. And now pediatrician suggested to go for a surgery. Surgery was very big word to hear for a such a small kid. As a mom, I couldn't bare my girl getting injection and I cried on her first vaccination day. Now I didn't know how to accept the truth that she needs a surgery.
Still I had faith in God. My girl was in safe hands. The surgeon was one of the best surgeons in Hyderabad. Biliary atresia: Babies who have this, bile flow from liver to gal bladder is blocked. As a result they have high bilirubin values and affects the liver. Surgeons suggest that surgery is the only option for babies with this condition.
Me and my husband still had hope and faith in God. expected our girl might need to clear the blocked ducts and was praying outside the theatre.
Unfortunately surgeon said she doesn't have any ducts formed from the birth time and he did his best to make bile flow from the liver
Later she was shifted to PICU.. That was the worse thing to see my Child on bed without feeding from past 48hours crying for milk, I was so helpless in that situation. We just prayed that she should recover soon from surgery. She was taking good feeds later on and we were discharged from the hospital. Now we need to observe her bilirubin very month and she still continues to have jaundice. When she reaches 2 years old we can go for a liver transplant. LT is the only option left for us. But unfortunately the succeed rate is very very less for this condition. All I want to share is when mommies observe the jaundice not getting down within 1 month in babies, immediately consultant your pediatrician. Please remember my girl in your prayers daily 🙏. My 4th month warrior name is Tanvika Rao
