The surgery is recommended as at times some organ can get trapped in the sac and can get damaged. These type of hernias do not go away on their own. In most cases it is a laproscopic surgery and the child is sent home once awake and starts feeding. The complications if any are minor and can be easily dealt with. A little bit of pain management at home and getting the dressing changes etc.
