What’s Constipation Actually & How It Affects The Child?
Constipation is one of the most common toddler challenges for parents these days. A day without complete bowel movement can be very unsettling and sometimes painful for a child of any age.
Who gave birth to this serious problem? Our modern lifestyle & our kids not less affected by the same.
Let’s understand what is Constipation? Kids might experience constipation if they:
have fewer than three bowel movements in a week
have trouble having a bowel movement
have stool (poop) that’s hard, dry, and unusually large
Most commonly kids are affected by this problem, feel bloated and uneasy with the inability to pass stool easily. Certain natural remedies can relieve constipation and help make the bowel movement smooth and uninterrupted. However, it does not take away the fact that you should offer balanced diet daily. Yes, exercising regularly can be the bonus.
Another reason for constipation can be due to a diet that doesn’t include enough water and fiber, which help the bowels move as they should. Kids who eat lots of processed foods, cheeses, white bread and bagels, and meats may become constipated fairly often.
Sometimes, medicines like antidepressants and those used to treat iron deficiencies can cause also constipation. Constipation can also happen in babies as they move from breast milk to baby formula, or from baby food to solid food. Toddlers who are toilet training sometimes can become constipated, especially if they’re not ready.
Here are the natural remedies that suggests in order to cure constipation:
1. Follow A Balanced Diet
One of the best ways to prevent constipation is to follow a balancing diet. Do not include cold foods and drinks, dried fruit, salads and most beans in your child’s diet. Favor warm foods, warm drinks and well-cooked vegetables, food rich in protein and carbs, fresh vegetables and dairy will help your child to clean the gut naturally.
2. Triphala Is Your Go-To Remedy
One of the most trusted and most effective remedies is Triphala, which is a fruit that helps cure constipation. You must be wondering Triplala for kids, Nah! But this alone humble combination three fruits has the power to give your child happy mornings.
You can have them in these simple ways: triphala tea or Triphla tonic. Triphala has laxative properties. You can also try to give Cardamom and coriander seeds powder with honey to older help relieve flatulence and indigestion.
3. Milk & Ghee
According to the book, ‘The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies,’ “taking one or two teaspoons of ghee in a cup of hot milk at bedtime is an effective and gentle means of relieving constipation.
4. Anjeer or Figs
Anjeer, or figs, soaked in warm water also helps treat constipation, and usually becomes aa morning treat for them. Figs are highly recommended due to the presence of high fiber content. You can eat figs every day in order to keep your digestion going.
5. Pears
Pears are rich in fiber and are highly recommended for get the relief from irritating mornings. It acts as a natural laxative by bringing water into the intestines and thus helps in getting your child’s smile back.
6. Spinach and Other Greens
Greens such as spinach, broccoli, fenugreek leaves, bottle gourd are not only rich in fiber but also great source of Vitamin C, Vitamin K, & Folate. These greens help in adding bulk and weight to pass stools, which makes them easier to pass through the gut.
7. Chia Seeds
Chia Seeds is one of the most dense foods. To my surprise 25 gms of chia seeds contains 12 gms of fiber. When chia seeds come in contact with water, it forms a gel. In the gut this can help soften stools to make them easier to pass.

Here is the array of recipes for you to keep your morning time happy and harmonious for your child.
1. Prunes and Ragi Balls/Ladoos
In the heavy bottom pan add the 2 tbsp. ghee. Add the Ragi Flour, until it changes color and gives aroma. Let the mixture cool completely. Ground the nuts until powder. Add in the dates, mix of prunes, dried figs, dried apricots. Process it as it forms a crumbly texture and starts combining. Now add the Ragi flour & combine everything. Take a spoonful of the mixture and form ladoos. Store it in a air tight container and enjoy.
2. Chia Seeds Cookies
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with Parchment paper. Add all the ingredients, 1 cup peanut butter, 1 tsp oil, 1/4 cup sugar, 1 large egg, tsp vanilla extract, 2 tsp cocoa powder, 1/2 tease salt, 1 tbsp chia seeds to a bowl and mix well. Roll the cookies dough into balls and place on the cookie sheet. Dip fork into a small amount of cocoa powder after each cookie is flattened. Bake for 10 mins or until the edges are just starting to crisp. Remove the oven and allow the cookies to cool. Shelf life for these cookies are 2 days.
3. Drumstick/Moringa Leaves Soup
This is so heart warming and nutrient dense. Take fresh drumsticks leaves and wash it. Finely chop onions, tomato and garlic. In a pressure cooker, heat a tsp of oil and add cumin seeds. Let it crackle. Then add 1/4 tsp peppercorns an garlic. Sauté them for two mins. Now add onions. Fry them nicely until golden brown. Add in tomato and mushy. Then add in washed drumstick leaves. Sprinkle required salt and turmeric powder. Give a quick stir. Add 1.5 cups of water. Pressure cook everything for together for 2 whistles in medium low flame. Once the pressure is released, open it. Strain the soup in a bowl.
4. Pear & Apple Smoothie
Peel the fruits and put aside. Put the apple juice, yogurt, apple, pear, oats and cinnamon, in a blender. Blend until smooth. Enjoy the creamy smoothie.
5. Broccoli Tofu Bowl
Sprinkle tofu cubes with salt aside in a bowl. Fill water in a large pot and set to boil. Heat the oil in a pan over medium heat. Add tofu and cook for 5 mins. Mean while mix sauce ingredients, 1cup water or vegetable broth, 3 tsp soya sauce, 3 tablespoon maple syrup, 1 tbsp cornstarch, 1 tsp sesame oil, 1/2 tsp ground ginger, 1 green onion chopped, in a medium bowl until smooth.
Flip tofu, add garlic slices, and cook for another 3 mins or golden brown. Meanwhile place broccoli in water for 2-3 mins until tender. Add sauce to tofu, stirring continuously until thickened. Stir in broccoli florets and spring onions and serve with freshly cooked rice.
The Bottom Line
There are many other fruits and veggies, pulses and seeds that can help in reliving constipation. I have tried to assemble few best options. A diet high in fiber helps in adding bulk, & weight to stools, soften them and stimulate bowel movements.
In addition, its vital to drink plenty of water, to increase your fiber intake. Regular exercise is another critical factor in improving systems of constipation and developing a healthy bowel habit.
