How many mothers talk about Postpartum Depression? How many actually know that they're going through it? At what stage of life do they suffer from it? Can you answer these questions?
I hardly know any mom(other than social media moms) who talk or know about their PPD. Women keep suffering from this Condition (it's not an illness!) without letting anyone know about it.
When does it happen?
PPD doesn't always occur in the first few days after delivery. It can happen many months later, or I feel even few yrs down the line or even when you have your second baby. Reasons could be - hormonal or physical changes in the body, or bcuz of the lifestyle restrictions & daily struggles after the arrival of your baby. You suddenly have so many changes in your life, & all this can eventually build up to PPD.
How to realise that you're going through PPD?
Mood swings, frequent urge to cry, anger, outburst, not feeling good about having a baby, & unconfident about your body are all commonly known symptoms. You might also feel very lethargic, don't want to do any work, don't feel like stepping out of the house, don't want to meet anyone.
What can be done to deal with PPD?
💞The best therapy is to talk! Talk to your partner about your feelings or to your parents or to your friends or cousins. The more you vent out these kind of feelings, the sooner you'll come out of it.
💞Start getting stronger in your head. Look in the mirror everyday & tell yourself that you're beautiful! That you are a miracle, having given birth to a new life. That no matter what other ppl say, you'll be happy & confident with the way you are & that you'll be brave for your baby.
💞Engage yourself in something that could give you a break from the mundane chores. Watch shows/movies (preferably comedy). Read a book(not about babies!). Start exercising when your body is ready. Go for a cup of coffee with your partner or friends. Not to forget social media, share your journey with the world, it gives immense confidence when ppl respond & appreciate you!
