Expression of breast milk is the main stay in feeding of preterm and low birth weight babies and with several mothers going out for work or I'll. There is need for storing and thawing. Expression of breast milk can be done by hand or by using electric breast pump. Before expressing or handling breast milk hands should be washed with soap and water.
When you are expressing breast milk by hand follow these steps :
1. Take a clean container for collecting milk.
2. Massage the breast towards the nipple.
3. Manipulate areola with the fingers.
4. Place thumb on one side and other fingers opposite to thumb.
5. Press back towards the chest and gently squeeze to release milk.
6. Repeat step 5 in different positions around the areola.
Expression of milk can be done by electric breast pump. It is easy and safe. It expresses milk as well as stimulates breast to produce more milk.
How to store breast milk?
Expressed breast milk (EBM) should be stored in a clean capped glass or hard polypropylene plastic containers or steel or special freezing bags. EBM should not be stored in the door and in disposable bottles or feeding bottles or plastic bags designed for general household use. It can be stored in room temperature for 6hrs. In refrigerator for 3 to 8days. In freezer for 6 to 12 months. Fresh breast milk is always superior as storage and thawing decreases fat content.
How to use the stored milk?
Frozen EBM can be placed in refrigerator the night before. Place in a bowl of warm water before giving it to the baby. Do not directly heat the milk.It is prudent to note that thawed breast milk should be used within 24 hours and any remaining milk should be discarded. Do not refreeze milk once it has been thawed or partially thawed.
