You may want to read my article on pain medication during labor on Babychakra. Epidural is an analgesia which is given in the lower back. It numbs you and removes the perception of pain. It is relatively safe with some short term side effects. It is advised for moms who have long and painful labors so it's best to wait till labor starts and then decide.

I used epidural and had discussed with my doctor earlier as well. It did provide relief in pain and did not cause any back pain after delivery.

I was in a plan of saying NO to epidural analgesia. But I couldn't bare the contraction pain. So I asked my doctor to inject it. After injecting it, the pain got reduced during
contraction. I learnt/heard that the injection may cause back pain even after delivery. I have back pain only when turning from side to side when lying. I'm fat and that MAY BE a reason. Not sure whether back pain is cos of epidural. I asked my gynac and she told that the injection is not the reason for back pain. Do ask the experience from the ladies who already had that injection. Also get advice from your gynac.
