I remember when I had just delivered. The feeling of being responsible for another human being is overwhelming to say the least.
That’s when they descended upon me. A slew of aunties desperate to ‘help’ me look after the baby. With numerous ‘helpful’ and ‘scientifically proven’ suggestions such as ‘Don’t eat cucumber. The baby might catch a cold.’ ‘Advising’ from their ‘experience’ that each and every thing I’d been doing was wrong.
Here’s the thing about advice. When not asked for, it’s just an opinion. And if an opinion is going to hurt someone’s feelings, it’s best kept to oneself.
So, the next time you meet a new mother, be kind, be nice, and tell her what a wonderful job she is doing! That’s my ‘advice’.
