I discovered my new avatar – Hangry – way back when I was expecting 11 years ago! And all this while Hangry Me has taken up different shapes and forms but has been a part of me. Let me try and introduce them to all of you – do let me know which Hangry Me do you like/relate to the most?
Hangry For Two: When I was expecting my cravings were as unpredictable as the Melbourne weather! One minute I would want something sweet, the other minute I wanted to eat dhokla! My mom’s cook wasn’t versatile so I actually hired another cook just to make healthy snacks for all of us while I was around. Result – since I would not know which craving to cater to – she would make something my mom wanted to eat which was usually not what I wanted to eat. That made me pretty much Hangry!
Crying Hangry: My baby was born with a food alert. I kid you not. As soon I would pick up my lone cup of coffee that I was allowed to drink, she’d start crying. I even tried drinking my coffee with a straw – it was a disaster.
Then when I would put her to sleep, tip-toe outside and head to the kitchen, as soon as I would open the fridge – the familiar and dreadful wailing would start. This baby would just not let me eat! Ufff!
Hangry Nappy: Finally someone would feel sorry for me and say, “you eat, I will hold the baby…” As soon as I would dig into my first morsel we all would be bombed by an explosion in baby’s nappy!! I would look at my thali, and kiss it g’bye, ‘coz after cleaning up the explosion I would lose my appetite.
Hangry in the Park: They say it gets better and easier at the toddler stage. Well getting them lil rascals to eat during terrible two’s and terrorist three’s is no easy task! You’d find us in the park every evening. With a packed evening snack (read early dinner). I would carry a variety of stuffed parathas and when my childoo and her friends would pass me while running around (with their maids in tow) – I’d manage to get them to bite into their respective parathas. They called me the Paratha Station. I would carry a couple of parathas for myself as well, but every day there would be a new friend who ran by the Paratha Station!
Forever Hangry: Now that my childoo is a tween we get to go out every weekend to a child friendly place of her choice. As expected, she is a foodie like her parents and is over-enthusiastic while ordering. Result: I dread ordering something of my choice ‘coz I first see if she likes what she ordered or not!!! I find myself exchanging plates with her many a time and feel like I’m eating leftovers!
But afterwards, I make sure we go to a dessert place of MY CHOICE where I don’t share my dessert with ANYONE! I’m wearing my Hangry Bird look on my face, so no one messes with me! That way, at least I don’t sleep Hangry :).
