Importance of the native language This is a topic very close to my heart.
Every year at a religious ceremony at home, I'm the only one from my age group who can read out the religious Paras(not Sanskrit).
This is a language that otherwise everyone can speak and understand. But they can't read or write it and it saddens me a bit. I've observed this pretty often-
Parents don't speak/ speak little of the mother tongue at home.
If they do speak, there's a chance they don't read or write the language.
Kids are forced to converse in English even at home. On one hand, it's great for everyone in general and especially your kids to talk and read fluently in English, one of the dominant world languages. But on the other hand, by not teaching children the native language, we will be taking away their Identity.
In addition, there have been studies that teaching children their home language has many advantages-
- It will increase their grasping power of other languages at school
- increase confidence of who they are
- promote awareness of ethnicity
- give them opportunity to learn about our rich culture via newspapers, books, magazines, plays, movies etc and give them a unique social and personal identity. I can speak and read my native language, however I don't come across the need/ opportunity to write it that often. But I plan to get back to writing it, when I'll teach my kids the same. My elder child has a great English vocabulary, is learning Sanskrit at school; and both kids understand the state and national language as well. Now I hope to inculcate interest and desire to read and write our mother tongue as well-; in the form of books, the way it was taught in my house. 🙂🙂
