In our Assamese community there are also differences in the rituals done during pregnancy. 5th month pregnancy ritual is organized in the maternal house, and 7th month pregnancy ritual in the paternal house. However in my case, as in most cases, only the 5th month ritual was done. The ceremony takes place in the presence of 5 married ladies. "Panchamrit " aka kheer is cooked with the added 5 special ingredients like curd, milk, honey, ghee and banana. 5 different types of sweets and fruits are arranged. The couple is then fed with this kheer by the wife's mother and presented with a thali of the sweet and fruits variety to both. Previously new dress is gifted by the mother to both which again consists of 5 different pieces. Like in my case the mekhela chadar I was wearing was gifted by my mother... the 5 pieces being the mekhela, the chadar, the blouse , petticoat and lingerie. Prayers are offered to the almighty to bless the couple and their baby to be. This I guess is the basic ritual. But many organisez this in a much larger scale by inviting friends and relatives to a hearty meal and sort of publicly announcing their pregnancy.
