After 40 weeks too baby can be delivered till 42 weeks, it's called late term, and doctors wait if there are no other complications or issues. If the baby weight is low then also doctors wait, so that baby puts on some weight. It depends on your case history and the doctor will decide what is the best for you. If they think it's ok to wait in your case, they wait for the pains to begin naturally, otherwise induce the labour.
