IVF (in vitro fertilization) is an assisted reproduction process that carries out fertilization outside the body followed by the transfer of the embryo in the woman’s uterus. If you are one of those going under IVF treatment or planning to do so, do not feel alone. It’s estimated that 1 in 8 women need extra assistance in getting pregnant.
The things to do and to avoid during IVF are not very different from a normal pregnancy.
Healthy eating
During the IVF treatment, it’s important that you focus on healthy eating. Avoiding gluten-containing foods, red meat, refined grains, processed foods, sugary, fried, and fatty foods is a must. Cut down on your salt intake and spices in your food. Additionally, avoid caffeinated drinks and alcohol intake too.
When it comes to maintaining a healthy diet add fresh fruits, vegetables, lean protein, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, healthy fats (avocado), legumes, and beans to your diet.
Workouts
A lot of people refrain from exercising during the IVF cycle with an idea that it will affect the pregnancy. But that is not true. Once your doctor’s given the green flag to workouts and yoga you can practice them on daily basis. Even when you are in the initial stage of the IVF cycle practicing breathing yoga is a great way to relax your mind and body, stay calm and support your health.
Avoid vigorous workouts like weight lifting, running, jogging, and high-intensity workouts.
Supplements
In most cases of IVF pregnancy, the doctor might recommend starting prenatal vitamins 1-2 months before the IVF cycle. Supplements like folic acid and vitamin D are extremely necessary to prevent neural tube defects in the developing fetus as well as support brain development.
Besides the supplements that a woman might have to take for pregnancy support, the male partner might also be prescribed a few supplements to boost fertility and improve sperm health.
Be it IVF or Natural pregnancy, it’s really important to adapt to a healthy lifestyle, nutritious diet, and support the pregnancy with some extra help from vitamins and supplements.
