Jaundice in newborns is characterized by high bilirubin levels in the body causing yellowing of the skin and eyes within the initial 2-4 days of birth.
Breastfeeding your babies in the first hour of birth and frequent breastfeeding days after that can help reduce the risk of jaundice. Breast milk fed to the babies will provide them with adequate energy to support the liver to process the bilirubin, and help them pass the bilirubin out of the body hence preventing high levels of bilirubin in the body that can lead to jaundice.
