Learning disabilities are neurologically-based processing problems. These processing problems
can interfere with learning basic skills such as reading, writing and/or math. They can also
interfere with higher level skills such as organization, planning, abstract reasoning, long or short
term memory and attention.
Learning Disability afflicts 10% of the school going children. There is no “cure” for learning
disabilities. However, children with Learning Disabilities can be high achievers and can be
taught ways to get around the learning disability.
There is a difference between Learning Disability and Learning Problems.
Learning Problems are primarily the result of visual, hearing, physical impairment, intellectual
disability and emotional disturbance, environmental, cultural or economic disadvantages.
Learning disability is a problem that affects how a person receives and processes information. It
is not caused by hearing or vision impairment. Difficulties with reading, writing and /or math can
be identified during the school years. Children with Learning Disabilities appears perfectly
“normal”. They have an average or above average intelligence. However, you will notice that
there is a discrepancy between the child’s potential and academic performance. This is why
Learning Disability is referred as an “Invisible Disability”.
Every child has a different learning style and pace. Each child has the potential to learn and has
an ability to succeed. With the right help, children with Learning Disability can and do learn
successfully.
It also requires parents to explore innovative strategies and to understand the preferred modality
of the child that suits best for him/her to learn new concepts.
If you feel that your child requires specialized intervention then please don’t delay in seeking
professional help. Early intervention is very important. It can help the child overcome his
difficulties.
