Lesson 1 SPIT UP OR VOMITING OR REFLUX OR GERD- ITS ALL THE SAME.
A very common problem of babies is spit ups vomiting or reflux whatever you may call it. 5 to 6 spit ups per day is normal but more than that like 10 to 15 spit ups; per day is worrisome.; In such condition a new mom and family members will definitely get worried about the new baby's weight gain issues . As if the pee and poop business was not enough, these pukes add to more mess, clean ups, and laundry as well. Hence, managing a refluxing baby is very tiresome and a challenge all together.

Babies have a weak; gastroesophageal sphincter; which fails to keep the ingested food down in the tummy. So the milk comes up to the mouth once they lay down.; This is known as gastroesophageal Reflux disease a.k.a GERD. It is very common in preterm babies and in babies with some congenital anomalies having constriction or obstruction in any part of the intestine. In case of intestinal obstruction, within the first month itself, baby will show severe signs and symptoms of not passing motion and gas, and will spit up everything that is ingested and the tummy will also become swollen.

How to identify a refluxing baby?

Baby twists and turn and arches frequently after feed and after waking up.
Frequent spit ups despite burping and Milk coming through mouth and nostrils
Frequent hiccups after spit ups.
