A new born baby should be exclusively breastfed upto 6 months. Weaning should be started only at 6+month. If the baby is on formula feeding and refluxing then early weaning can be considered.
Weak gastroesophageal sphincter fails to keep milk down in the tummy. But a semi liquid gruel can stay down in the tummy without any reflux. So, I started with apple puree, ripe papaya puree rice water, and dal water at 4.5 months. Rice water helped a lot to control the refluxes.
Then I went on with dal papaya potato carrots boiled and pureed into a paste. After some time he detested it. So now I am giving only dal and potato puree.
I also give him wheat biscuit grounded into powder with a scoop of formula and lukewarm water. It forms a creamy thick liquid. Its his favourite.
I have also started nestle cerelac at 6 months.
All this reduced the refluxes considerably and gave him some freedom to play and be on his tummy. With milk down in tummy, the moment he would roll over; all the milk would be out. So he was kept tightly swaddled and upright for hours on the shoulders or lap or in the rocker. With summers beginning and with the strengthening of his limbs swaddling was no more possible. He would move twist roll over and spit out all the milk. So I consulted his Pediatrician as well as a few experienced elders and my mom who guided me through his early weaning. His weight gain is also better now. And he is a happy baby now. A happy baby is all that any new mom wants, so did I. I had surrendered to anything that can make my baby a happy baby. So Early weaning – be it, if it was the only way.
Before considering to wean your baby before 6+ months, do consult the pediatrician and strictly follow their advice. No need to hurry or rush. Each baby is different. Follow your newly found motherly instincts and you can never ever go wrong. Take all advice and suggestions from elders. Do your own homework and research. After being completely convinced and armed with proper knowledge , go ahead with your decision for your baby.
