Leukorrhea, a normal vaginal discharge that is milky white or clear is experienced by every woman during pregnancy. This discharge is odourless or has an extremely mild odour and is considered to be harmless. This vaginal discharge is one of the early signs of pregnancy and is believed to increase through the pregnancy period.
Softening of the vaginal wall and cervix and pressing of the baby’s head against the cervix in the later stage of pregnancy can lead to an increase in this vaginal discharge.
Where such normal vaginal discharge is believed to be a body’s way to prevent infection, a change in the odour, colour or amount can be indicative of an infection. Having pink, red, green, dark yellow, or grey discharge with foul/bad odour and symptoms like cramps, burning sensation while passing urine, itchiness, etc is indicative of internal infection.
Such conditions shouldn’t be ignored and treated immediately to avoid serious complications.
